A network monitoring system that:

  • Monitors the network for problems caused by bursts, leaks, changes in customer demand, theft, transients, engineering work, network design issues
  • Reports on the condition of assets in the network: pipes, PRVs, valves, pumps, flow meters, loggers, controllers, actuators
  • Reports on network performance

For example, to determine the level of leakage in a DMA, monitoring software may periodically invoke a step change in pressure at night; to determine the health of a PRV, pressure readings may be taken and analysed.

Commonly measured metrics are pressure, flow and leakage, although both consistency and reliability metrics are starting to gain popularity. The widespread addition of logging devices is having an adverse effect on most network monitoring activity because there aren’t enough people to analyse the information they are yielding, let alone to ensure that they remain operational.

Outages, such as bursts or loss of pressure from other causes, usually produce an action from the monitoring system. These actions vary; an alarm may be sent (via SMS, email, etc.) to the relevant engineer, automatic failover systems may be activated to open/close valves to maintain supply while the damaged section can be removed from duty until it can be repaired, etc.
